Why did I donate a kidney to my neighbor? In Louisiana, neighbors tend to become friends very quickly. Not long after we moved in across the street from Michelle, she was diagnosed with kidney failure. For a couple years it was managed through diet and medication and then the dreaded day came when we found out that dialysis had to be started. My wife and I, without hesitation, went to get tested to see if we were a match for Michelle. About two weeks later, I got my phone call letting me know that I was an exact match (1:10,000 odds for a non-relative). After much discussion and hours of prayer, my 85 year old grandma said, "Would you want someone to donate to your family in need if they had the means?" At that point, I knew there was no turning back. I lost my own parent as a kid and now I could give life so another kid did not have to grow up without a parent. It has been 6 years since the transplant took place and there have been NO REGRETS. If you are thinking about getting tested or are a match for Aaron, please reach out to me directly with any questions you may have.
